PhixFlow Default User Groups

PhixFlow has 6 user groups enabled by default, each with a set of Roles defined. Any user who is part of the Administrator group has permissions to update these default roles, although it is recommended that these roles be left alone. If a different set of permissions is required other than what is available in the existing User Groups, that new Group (and its Privileges) should be defined separately, and given it's own Privileges and access to PhixFlow components. The 6 . Each user group has its own role, which defines the privileges for the group. We recommend that you do not change the default roles, although users who belong to the Administrator group have permissions to update them if required. To configure PhixFlow to have a different set of permissions, create:

  • a new user group and define the PhixFlow components that users can access
  • a new role that specifies the privileges.

The default user groups are :

A user group for the initial setup of a new PhixFlow installation.  When first installed, PhixFlow creates a startup user in this group, with privileges to administer other users. Once you have added users to the Administrator group, remember to delete this user.

Only users who are part of the Administrators User Group can create, delete or update another users' credentials.

If a new User Group is required then it can be added through the User Group list. The User Group list shows all User Groups configured in PhixFlow. To add a User Group please carry out the following:

Open the User Group List

Open the User Group list by expanding the section Image Removed User Groups in the Repository Browser. User Groups may be created in the full repository or under an application.

Adding a User Group

To add a user group right click on the section heading Image Removed User Groups in the Repository Browser and select Image Removed Add User Group. For more details on the User Group configuration see 2168686322.

For details on who can add or remove users from a user group, see Access Permissions below.

Users

This table lists the users that belong to this User Group. To add a user to a group open the user list and then drag and drop one or more users into this tab. Please note, users can be associated with User Groups from both the user form (by dragging and dropping the User Group onto the user), and the User Group form (by dragging and dropping the user onto the User Group).

The user group settings provides sections add a name, the users who are members and the modeling objects and applications that the users can access. See User Group for details of the specific settings and how to edit the lists.

Tip

There are two ways you can add a user to a user group.

  • In the user group settings → Users section, open a list of users and drag one or more into the list.
  • In the user settings → User Group section, open a list of user groups and drag one or more into the list.

PhixFlow automatically updates the settings so that users and their groups remain consistent.

Roles and Privileges

The privileges that members of a user group have is controlled by their role. To find out what privileges a user group has, in the user group settings → Role section double-click on the role. PhixFlow opens the role settings where the Privileges section lists all the privileges. For example, the Modeller privilege includes List Database Exporters, Modify Database Exporters and View Database Exporters.

User groups can have multiple roles. For example you may want a group of users who can both create models and add filters to views on the models. In this case you could add the two roles Designers and SuperUsers.

Note

We recommend that you do not change the default roles, although users who belong to the Administrator group have permissions to update them if required.

Restricting Access to Modelling Objects

By default, PhixFlow is set up to allow all users to access all data (provided they have the privilege “View Stream Data”). However if access to a Stream is restricted (by unchecking the option “All Users Can View Data” on a Stream), then group members can only see this data if the Stream is listed here.

To add a Stream, open the Stream list and drag one or more into this tab. Note that this access permission can also be granted by opening up the Stream form and dropping User Groups onto the Stream User Group tab.

Access Permissions

This tab allows you to restrict who can add or remove members from the user group. If it is ticked, you'll see a list of user groups.

Adding or removing users from the User Group is permitted for the following users:

  1. Users with the UserAdministration privilege.
  2. Users with the EditUserGroupMembers, who are also in one of the configured groups under Access Permissions.

The same restrictions also apply when dragging user groups on to a user configuration pane.

Description

A description of the User Group can be entered into the free text box under the Description tab.

with the relevant privileges to access all modelling objects, such as streams, stream views, dashboards, filters etc. However, you may need to restrict access to only some objects, for example to provide access to specific dashboards related to a project. To do this:

  1. In the object's settings → Access Permissions section, untick the All Users can View Data check box.
  2. Either, in the object's settings → User Group section, drag in the user group.
or, in the user group settings, expand the section related to the type of object and drag it into the user group.

Now only users of the specified group can use the modelling object.

Access Permissions

You can limit which users can add or remove members from a user group. Tick the Access Permissions → Restrict who can manage members of this user group check box. PhixFlow adds a grid where you can drag in other user groups. See User Group > Access Permissions for details.
