This page is for application designers who want to start a new application project. It explains how to create an application.
Overview
You create a new application project from the PhixFlow Welcome window. From the Welcome window, you can also:
- switch between card and list views using the buttons on the right: see List Views
- select an existing application from the list: see Designing Applications
- import an application using the button on the left.

How to Create a New Application
When you create an application project, PhixFlow guides you through the process in 3 steps.
Step 1 Name your application

Overview
The starting point for any application is creating everything you need for your project within PhixFlow. The Create Application window prompts you for the essential information PhixFlow needs to:
- set up all the folders in the repository that your project will need.
- create a default menu.
You can find the menu in the repository → Menus branch →application_name
_Menu
.
When you add the first option to the menu, it is automatically displayed in the menu bar; see Startup Actions → Static Menu Creation. - add a template to your application's Packages folder.
The template includes the palettes that will give your application a consistent design; see Understanding Template Packages and Package. - set default properties based on the template. Default properties include:
- formats for dates and numbers
- the palette and components to use for forms, data fields and cards
- the styles for data grids
- the default action which should run when your application is opened. For example, an actionflow to open a navigation window and landing page.
Creating a New Application
To create a new application:
1. Click Add New from the PhixFlow Landing Screen.

2. PhixFlow opens the Create Application window.
3. Set the following properties for your application:
Name: enter a name.
Version: enter a development version number, for example 1.
Description: we recommend that you enter the purpose of
this application and who is responsible for it.
Click Next.
At this point, PhixFlow creates all the items for your application.
This includes a menu, which you can find in the repository → Menus branch → application_name
_Menu
. You do not need to use this menu. However, when you add options to it, the menu is displayed on the right of the menu bar at the top of the PhixFlow window; see Menu.
Step 2 Choose an icon
PhixFlow needs an icon to display in the application list. To keep the default application icon, click Next. You can change the icon later; see Application properties.
To change your application icon:
Template: select a template to provide a design theme and to set key properties.
Application Icon: select an image that PhixFlow displays in the card on the application menu. If you do not select an icon, PhixFlow uses a default image.

In the file window, find and select the image file you want to use as an icon.
PhixFlow uploads the file and sets it to be your application icon.
PhixFlow shows the file name in the Image Name field and displays the icon in Icon Preview.
Click Next
Step 3 Select a theme
PhixFlow comes with several design themes. The theme sets defaults styles for grids in your application. You can adapt and change your theme or it's defaults in the Application properties. For more information about themes and component palettes, see Using Palettes and Themes.
Use the arrows to scroll through the different themes until you find the one you like.
When the theme you like is displayed, click Create.
PhixFlow creates the application project files and opens the Application Home widow, which is described in Designing Applications

In PhixFlow, you can bundle items together into a package. This makes it easy to share items across different applications.
A theme is a package. It has all the different palettes, components and styles that your application may need. When you select a theme for your application, PhixFlow adds the Theme package to it. You can see the theme package contents in the repository Packages folder

Changing Application Settings
When you create your application project, you are setting up some defaults for the whole application. To change or set additional options for your application:
- either go the the application Home window and use the link in the top right of the window
- or open the repository and click on the application name.
PhixFlow opens the Application properties.
Your application may also be using defaults set in System Configuration. For example, you can optionally specify the formats for dates and times in your application using the settings:
- Date
- Date/Time
- Number
loaded into PhixFlow
Or click to find an image saved on your computer to load it into PhixFlow.
Tip Icons for the application menu should be:
- up to 100 pixels high
- between 100 to 150 pixels wide
4. Click Create Application. PhixFlow prompts you to load the application, we recommend you do this as this displays the application home options.
Default Properties
PhixFlow sets default style or number/date formats for your application based on your template. You can see or change these in the Application Properties. If a default style or number/date format is not set in the application properties, PhixFlow uses defaults set in System Configuration.
